Reclaimed Wood Characteristics

Reclaimed wood has been exposed to the elements where it has gained its character and whilst it has been dried in storage, further drying is still possible within a heated home. Wood naturally adjusts to its environment, adapting in ways such as shrinking, swelling, splitting and moving. This is entirely natural and we build in a factor of adjustment in our furniture, particularly when joining wood to steel. This allows the wood to do the above without restriction.

Those natural adjustments are cosmetic and enhance the character and individual style of that particular item.

How accurate are the wood colour options?

Whilst every effort will be made to match the samples shown, reclaimed wood is a natural product and as such the grain and levels of weathering can vary from one piece of wood to another, thus the finish may appear slightly lighter or darker from one item of furniture to the next. This is impossible to avoid due to the nature of the wood being used.

Should I let my furniture adapt to its new environment?

As noted in the 'Reclaimed Wood Characteristics' question, reclaimed wood is real wood and as such it will adapt to its environment. Over time the wood can move, small cracks can appear and existing cracks may open up further.

To give your new furniture the best chance of adapting to its new environment at its own pace, it is advisable to keep your items away from a direct heat source i.e. radiators, stoves etc. It is advisable to turn down the radiator within the room to a lower temperature for the first 1-2 weeks before gradually increasing to the desired level. Failure to do so may cause the wood to move at a much faster rate than it can handle.
